Four Artemis Project Proposals Delivered

Following the strategic pillar of international networking projects and the focused ARTEMIS initiative for embedded systems, CISTER joined four consortia and presented four new project proposals within the ARTEMIS 2013 call.

EMC2 (Embedded multi-core systems for mixed criticality applications in dynamic and changeable real-time environments) is an AIPPs proposal involving several partners, namely Infineon Technologies, BMW and Siemens. From Portugal it involves CISTER and Critical software leading a Use Case in one of the Living Labs (automotive). CISTER is also involved in an avionics use case led by EADS.

ICC (Innovative Care Cycle) is another AIPP in the health topic. The Portuguese involvement is within a consortium led by Critical Software, and including INESC–ID Lisbon, the University of Coimbra, a small SME Perceive3D and the Hospital of the University of Coimbra, one of the reference hospitals in Portugal. CISTER is also involved in leading a task on the specification of a real-time version of the DICOM standard for exchange of medical images and video. Industrial partners include Philipps Medical, Agfa Healthcare and GE Healthcare.

DEWI (Dependable Embedded Wireless Infrastructure) envisions to significantly foster Europe’s leading position in embedded wireless systems and smart (mobile) environments such as vehicles, railway cars, airplanes and buildings. Each of these environments is reflected as a domain in the project proposal and CISTER’s main work is in the AERONAUTICS domain (SP2), leading the WP2.5 (Active Flow Control by Means of a Dense WSAN ) and participation in WP2.4 (Increasing Flight Safety). CISTER is also involved in management and architectural work in the INTEROPERABILITY domain (SP6) that is responsible for finding commonalities between the several application domains. IIndustrial partners include Airbus Operations, EADS, Acciona, NXP Semiconductors, Philips, Thales Alenia and Volvo.

COMIT (Collaborative Multi-level Integration Testing of Embedded Systems) proposal is related to testing and verification of embedded systems aiming at Improving Quality and Cost Efficiency of Embedded Systems through Incremental Integration Testing. In this proposal CISTER leads the formal verification task, whose main topic is runtime verification. Industrial partners include bombardier Transportation and Nokia Siemens Networks. 

ARTEMIS/FP7 CONCERTO Technical Meeting

CISTER Researchers Eduardo Tovar, Vincent Nelis, Geoffrey Nelissen and Gurulingesh Raravi attended the first technical meeting of the CONCERTO project on the 7th of June 2013, Paris, France. A summary of the work done was presented by CISTER and further discussions were held with the consortium team with the aim of integrating previous research into the project work plan.

CISTER will be central to the success of one of the main objectives of CONCERTO, which is to extend the multicore domain of the model driven engineering approach that critical software developedwithin the recently finished CHESS FP7/Artemis project.

SENODS Project Evaluation

Following similar events from previous years, the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, funded by FCT conducted the annual project review last June 18th, in the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Lisbon. The project review consisted of an overview presentation of the research projects made to an Evaluation Committee, composed of specialists in the area. Representatives of CISTER/INESC-TEC and of the industrial partner involved in the SENODs project (Sustainable ENergy-Optimized Datacenters), participated in this meeting.

The efforts carried out under the SENODS project deserved excellent feedback by the Evaluation Committee, and the project results were considered very relevant by the industry partner.

First CISTER Industrial Workshop

CISTER organized the 1st Industrial workshop CiWork 2013 on June 18. The aim of the CISTER Industrial Workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from within industry and academia and provide them with a platform to report on recent advances and developments in the newly emerging areas of real-time and embedded technologies, as well as actual and potential applications to industrial systems.

Besides a poster session presenting CISTER’s work of interest to the industrial attendees, several companies presented their view on the real-time embedded systems challenges and opportunities, namely: Tomorrow Options, Micro I/O, Critical Software, Edisoft, Critical Materials, ISA, Evoleo and Aavanz.

CISTER hosts SIES’2013, the 8th IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems

CISTER organized and hosted the 8th IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems on 19 - 21 June 2013 in Porto, Portugal. SIES is one of the leading events in the area of real-time embedded systems sponsored by the IEEE. CISTER researchers also played an instrumental role within the program committee, where CISTER researchers acted as General Co-Chair, Publication chair and Finance chair.

Besides an interesting program with several talks from researchers around the world, there were three keynote speakers:

Rolf Ernst - Automotive Communication - From Buses to Switched Networks

Michael Paulitsch - Dependable and secure computing and networks in aerospace - the past, the present and a glimpse into the future

Chenyang Lu - Real-Time Wireless Control Networks for Cyber-Physical Systems
