"Two people in one, one as the reflection of the other, its double". This was how Dutilleux explained his division of the orchestra into two groups when composing his Second Symphony for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Orchestra, a work which definitively established him as a leading international figure. Treating the symphony orchestra as if it were a soloist and considering the collective as a single instrument with endless possibilities for timbre, was the idea of Pascal Dusapin, Composer in Residence 2012, when he began his major cycle of Solos for Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra presents the first of these, premièred by the legendary Mstislav Rostropovitch in 1992, and the last, premièred in March 2009 at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, ending the cycle with a very direct and energetic discourse.
