When he wrote his final symphony, Tchaikovsky stated that he had based it on a dramatic story that he would not reveal. It would be up to the public to guess what it was. The symphony only became a success after the composer's death. Nowadays various theories persist suggesting that it was a portrait of the composer's life, ending with an Adagio that resembles a requiem for an approaching death. With beautiful and poignant melodies written as only Tchaikovsky knew how, the Symphony Pathétique remains a favourite with audiences.
