It is the start of the 1950s. Sitting in a park in Darmstadt during the Summer School season, the composers Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez are looking at a score, together with pianist Yvonne Loriod. A new page is being turned in the history of music. With Mode de Valeurs et d'intensités, Messiaen produced the first work of integral serialism, involving a duration (rhythm) and specific dynamic for each note and pitch (frequency). When Stockhausen heard Messiaen's own recording he said that a whole new sound universe had opened up before him. Jonathan Ayerst, pianist with the Casa da Música Remix Ensemble, presents works by Boulez, Messiaen, Ravel and Debussy which had an innovative influence on the piano repertoire in the 20th.century.
