Artur Barrio (Porto, 1945) returns to the Museum of Contemporary Art Serralves with the exhibition "... navigation / ramblings ... among reefs and shoals ...", which opens the next day April 13, 2012.
The work of Barrio surprised by how the artist builds ephemeral situations where the experience of life and art intersect in the subversion of the place of presentation of the artwork and the challenge to the status of the viewer. This view is brought to abandon their passivity and discover and interpret each project of the artist as a physical and conceptual experience that will expand your awareness and knowledge of the world. In many projects Barrio, perishable organic materials such as bread, fish, meat, wine, water and coffee are combined with text, drawings and photographs by proposing new experiments sensitive and the knowable. The place, time and the discourse of art are often the subject of criticism in the work of the artist, when detached from human experience of the world in a unique way that combines the simplicity of the elements and complexity of ideas.
The artist has developed a very personal way of documenting their actions and situations through records such as text, photography, artist book, film or video. This very special relationship between the registry and the situation that causes has been recognized in many international exhibitions where his work has been presented. Being one of the protagonists in an artistic context that, in Brazil, contributed decisively to a critique of modernism and a redefinition of the artwork, the piece de Barrio has been published internationally since the famous exhibition "Information", presented at the MoMA 1970, to its recent participation in the Documenta XI in Kassel in 2002, the 29th São Paulo Biennial (2010) or the 54th Venice Biennale (2011), where he represented Brazil. The Ministry of Culture of Spain awarded him in 2011 Velazquez Prize, for his "radical poetics", in which there is "the appearance of an unexpected beauty."
The return of Artur Barrio to Serralves is also a return to the presentation of their work in Porto, where he was born on February 1, 1945. Between Portugal and Brazil, between Europe and South America, life and work of Artur Barrio also combine the wandering, traveling, the ocean and the constant rediscovery of self and others, who is often seen as Portuguese in Brazil or Brazil as in Portugal. The Serralves Museum has, since the exhibition "Regist (R) the" held in 2000 until today, continued to work with the artist, from the project poured cold water on a voyage of navigation between Rio de Janeiro and Porto until this next exhibition "... navigation / disclosures ... among reefs and shoals ...". Artur Barrio will now "make her" the central room of the Museum of Serralves, reinventing it with a new project specifically designed for this space, the artist will transform over several weeks, before and after its opening.
