The reign of D. Pedro I
At the end of his father’s reign, Prince D. Pedro was already taking part in the administration, being responsible for the command of the realm. Hence, at the time of his proclamation as King of Portugal and of the Algarve, by the Grace of God, D. Pedro I knew his territory better than anyone. He traversed the country from top to bottom, bringing justice to every corner, and doing so in a rather old fashioned way, being excessively harsh and not always rigorous: he was called the Cruel or the Just and would be more of an executioner than a judge. The people acknowledged his protection, naming him Just. The nobility both feared and respected him, and he was gentle to some of the lords, as opposed to his predecessors. As for the clergy, the enmity and dislike continuously grew, giving way to the affirmation of the eminence of the State towards the Church. He approved laws that furthered the sea trade, created new counties, administered agriculture and pasture. In the field of international relations, he maintained the friendship with Castile, despite the quarrels with that kingdom. Although he is almost always remembered by the story of vengeance against the executioners of Inês de Castro, D. Pedro I was king for only ten years, bringing Portugal to a state of financial prosperity and peace with the neighbour states.
