Cybersecurity in Industrial Control Systems

Traditionally, cybersecurity strategies in industrial systems have relied on a hardened perimeter and defense in depth. However, the use of commodity operating systems and the increased use of Ethernet as the physical layer even at the field device network level suggest that this approach is no longer sufficient, as evidenced by recent security breaches in industrial systems. The emergence of mobility and cloud computing provides exciting opportunities for high-value applications but widespread adoption is unlikely until digital security is more fully addressed.
